The Welsh Club Championship

Thanks to Jeanette Higham for this report.

The Welsh Club Championships were held at Hawkesbury Bowling Club on Sunday 15th September. The four teams competing were Esclusham, Broughton, Llanrwst and Rhos Park – each winners of their area’s County Cups. Three of the four clubs have won this contest previously. In the first round groups Llanrwst played Esclusham, with Esclusham taking 6 winners from the eight to be played. The best of those wins was Nick Jones 21-7 over Mike Pritchard. The closing scores were Esclusham 152, Llanrwst 114.

Rhos Park and Broughton were the second group. Broughton lead with five winners over Rhos Park’s three. The games in this group were much tighter with only a few points to separate the teams. AJ Russell’s game with Ivor Jones was to seal Broughton’s place in the final.

In the final reckoning, Esclusham showed what a strong team they are, once again taking 6 out of the eight games. Owen Jackson and Nick Jones had the best, and single figures wins both at 21-9. Final scores were Esclusham 159, Broughton 127. Both of these teams qualify for the World Club Championship later in the year.
