Coaching Day at Abergele

FIRST CLASS COACHES…

On a gorgeous Thursday 10th of April, Abergele Bowling Club was the venue for one of the WCGBA Coaching Society’s training sessions to facilitate those interested in coaching young, would-be players, and those taking up the game for the first time.

Led by Pauline Lindley, Gareth Hughes and Judy Hughes, eight bowlers interested in developing their coaching skills for the benefit of others were welcomed and introductions made. Seven of those attending came from Benllech Bowling Club.

A few had some teaching skills and there was a wide range of player experience from the group.

The training day began indoors where Pauline started the session by reminding them that ‘Bowls is Fun’. Whilst bowling techniques would become important as one progressed in the game, too many rules and caveats often discourage participation. This could lead to youngsters and beginners not wishing to continue to be involved in the game.

The attendees were shown how to explain to those starting out in the game what the shapes, features and writing on the bowls signified. The all important bias and the use of the whole green is also something that needs to be touched on early in the learning stage. How to use the mat correctly should be introduced a little later.

A variety of bowling ‘aids and goodies’ were then introduced as the session moved outdoors. ‘Bowls Buddies’, target mats and a bowls target ramp were among the items used.

Several interested newcomers had arrived by this time and four groups of four ( two coaches and two players) spread around the green to try coaching and playing first hand. There was much delight as coaches and would-be bowlers saw helpful , practical advice and personal skills coming together.

After a fun and pleasurable hour on the green, it was back inside for some feedback. Everyone felt they had learnt something valuable to take away as well as a certificate which enables them to coach at club level and all ages. The feeling that bowls really ‘is’ a sport for all ages and abilities was mentioned more than once. It was also mentioned that clubs could consider holding a ‘Rules Seminar’ led by a qualified Referee to give advice on the rules of the game. This would be a valuable addition to future coaching.

One very important reminder was made by Judy Hughes, WCGBA Safeguarding Officer, concerning safeguarding at Club training sessions. Consultation with parents who have come with their children is vital if physical contact with a child is felt necessary ie holding their hand to explain how to hold or deliver a bowl. Disruptive behaviour needs to be dealt with calmlyand in a confidential manner.

One is encouraged to consider coaching as not only a help to others, but as a personal benefit to your own experience and to instil a lifelong interest in the sport.
