Kerrie Jones Wins WCGBA Veterans Merit

Thanks to Dave Matthias for this report

Well after two disastrous “bad weather” days, when hosting the Welsh Junior Merit in 2018 and the Gwyn Morris Welsh Men’s Merit in 2019 (both at the Benllech B.C), the Good Weather God’s were with me today, at the Caernarfon Bowling Club, for the 2022 Welsh Veterans Finals Day Competition.
The Caernarfon Bowling Club Green Keeper had provided and excellent bowling surface for the event, although initially, after heavy overnight rain, it did not show its true worth until the Sun came out in the early afternoon.
It was pleasing for me to have the support of Welsh Patron – John Percy – the current Welsh President – Simon Walker – the current Welsh Deputy President – Jack Hunt and former Welsh President’s Dusia Price and Dave Walker. Dave of course also acting today as a the very capable Welsh Tournament Officer.
The match on the First Round (last 16), was between Andy Williams of the Penmaenmawr Bowling Club and Kerrie Jones of the Gresford Colliery Bowling. With Andy 20/19 up and having a three foot corner to corner second wood, good enough to win the match, Kerrie managed to pass it to tie the match 20/20, before winning the next end and the match 21/20.
The Quarter Finals saw the following results:
John Bonatti – 21 Geraint Roberts – 9
Elfyn Jones – 21 Phil Holmes – 11
Kerrie Jones – 21 Bob Jones 15
Brian Hayes – 21 Kevin Williams (CYD) – 15.
The Semi Finals were dominated by the Jones’ with
Elfyn beating John 21/12 and
Kerrie beating Brian 21/11.
The final was for the most part dominated by Kerrie who from 7/7, took what appeared to be an unassailable 20/10 lead. But with Elfyn finding his form to win the next five ends on the bounce, it was suddenly at 16/20, game on. However a measure on the next end, gave Kerrie the winning point he needed, to win the 2022 Welsh Veterans Merit Championship 21/16, and in so doing, completing,in his bowling lifetime, the Double, as both Men’s and Veterans Champion.
The Finalists and possibly the losing Semi Finalists now going on to play in the British Jack and Jean Isherwood Finals Day at the Prees Bowling Club in Shropshire in July.
My thanks go out to:
The players and spectators who were at Caernarfon today, to help make the event, one that will live long in my memory.
To Tournament Officer Dave Walker
To Gwynedd CGBA Treasurer Delwyn Lewis for running the Match Day Raffle.
To Simon Walker for the all round assistance he gave me, especially setting up the P.A. system and for posting some excellent photographs and score updates of the day, on the Welsh Bowls Facebook Group Page.
To the three Match Day Referee’s – D T Evans, Richard Hayward and Ian Black.
To Dusia Price for the unsung assistance she gave me today and always does give to the Welsh CGBA in general.
To Neil and Mair of the Caernarfon Bowling Club, for the excellent work they did keeping everyone watered and fed, throughout the day.
And of course to the 2022 Welsh CGBA Veterans Champion, Kerry Jones, on being a worthy winner on the day, even after he was one wood away from going out 21/19 in the First Round.
And finally I would like to mention three hard working servants of the Welsh CGBA, who couldn’t be at Caernarfon today, Peter and Jeanette Higham and Pauline Lindley.
So an excellent day all round for one of my last duties as Deputy President – President and Past President. I look forward now to supporting Simon Walker on his big day on the 26th June 2022 at the Nercwys Bowling Club and to supporting Jack Hunt during his Presidential year in 2023.
