BCGBA Ladies Dorothy Piearce Memorial Pairs.
This popular ladies pairs competition reached its final day on Saturday 12th August at Fox Lane Sports and Social Club ,Leyland, Lancashire. 32 pairs – two pairs from each county competing for the trophy. Wales has come close to clinching the title of champions before.
Linda Williams and partner Belinda Lloyd started their campaign solidly with a 21-17 win in the first round against a couple from North Midlands. The second Welsh pair, Jackie Egerton and Sian Maddox had a resounding 21 -6 first round win against another North Midlands pair, but went out in the second round.
Linda and Belinda had a close call in the second round winning 21-20 against North Warwickshire.
In the quarter final, they stormed to a 21-10 win over Ellen Aindow and Susan Pugh from Dudley and District. It was a much closer semi final with Amy and Emma Tobin of Yorkshire but the Welsh pair won the game 21-19.
It was all to play for in the final against Fay Carson and Janet Hargreaves of Staffordshire, a county that has won the trophy before. The Welsh pair settled in and despite the high temperatures of the day and the mammoth 10 hours it took to get through the stages of the competition, Linda and Belinda stayed a couple of ‘cool chicks’ to win comfortably 21-13 and to bring the trophy home to Wales for the first time. Well done girls.
